August marks the winding down of the summer season, and while the fun is not over yet, the end looms in the back of everyone’s mind. Why not give your friends something to look forward to with a Labor Day weekend celebration out on your beautiful custom-designed deck. Give summer a ‘going away’ party – the perfect time to enjoy one more long, holiday weekend to revel the last days of summer before the days start getting shorter and fall descends upon us.
Whether you want to spend the time planning a large party or just a simple gathering of some family and friends, your outdoor party should involve food and activities. Invite guests to bring an item for the grill or a side dish to share with everyone to cut down on your own pre-planning efforts.
If you are doing a daytime party, consider having some “beat the heat” activities. A lively game of “cold potato” can keep guests cool – fill a pinpricked water balloon with water. Guests pass the quickly leaking balloon until the water runs out. Other activities could include a slip n’ slide, more water balloon games, or just a good old-fashioned sprinkler for the kids to run through.
If you are going for a dinner evening party, be sure to have plenty of seating for guests and low, ambient lighting to set the mood. Look for lighted strands of mini paper lanterns at discount stores, or simply put some tea lights into old mason jars. Add a bit of flair to your grilling by placing stems of rosemary right on the coals for a flavorful punch to your cooking. The nights are still warm enough that you can enjoy a great meal outside while watching the sun set on the horizon and the stars come out.
Even if you don’t throw a big bash or have a cookout for friends and family, there are still plenty of ways you can spend time on your deck or patio to enjoy the last hurrah of summer. Just grab your favorite book and head outside!
